Middle East Highlight:
United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.)
The United Arab Emirates is one of the world's youngest nations. The UAE borders the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Traditional forms of art and culture are preserved while modern architecture and the pace of development mix the old with the new. The desert climate, warm seas and lovely beaches make it a popular tourist destination.
Abu Dhabi is a modern city, filled with skyscrapers. The UAE's capital, located on an island connected to the mainland by two bridges, has been transformed into a modern city with plenty of high-rise buildings, broad boulevards and luxury hotels. There are still traces and remnants of the old days in the city, including several souks, markets and craft centres, but they are surrounded by a very modern and extremely affluent urban landscape that is more orientated towards the future than the past.
Dubai is a tourism hotspot, with superb and world-famous shopping, rich cultural life, and some of the most amazing urban skylines anywhere in the world. Dubai's evolution has been dramatic, with sweeping skyscrapers rising up everywhere. The rulers of Dubai have a fondness for grand projects - one year the world's tallest tower (Burj Arab), the next a string of manmade islands (the three Palms and the World) and now Dubailand, a massive project that will produce a leisure oasis in the desert.
